Professional Hair Tips

Regular trims are vital for healthy hair, even if you're growing it. Hair grows at a rate of about 1 in every six weeks so go for a 1/2in trim every eight weeks. Find a hairdresser who's not too eager with the scissors and explain that you want to maximise growth. Remember that your hair will only grow to a certain lenght, and everyone's different. But while you might never have Rapunzel locks, with proper care you can make the most of its growth potential.

Don't use harsh shampoos. Treat your hair like you would a delicate item of clothing - use the gentlest products and take care not to snag, knot or break it.

When washing, don't rub your hair too vigorously as this encourages knots.

Conditioning is a must. Hold your hair in a ponytail and apply from where you would usually tie it, all the way through to the ends. Use a comb to evenly distribute the product - look for one with rounded teeth that won't damage the hair. Once a week, use an intensive conditioning mask, rinse well, finishing with a blast of cold water - this will make the hair cuticles lie flat to help seal moisture in the hair. You could also use a leave-in conditioner.

Be extra gentle when drying. Don't wring or twist your hair - just wrap a towel loosely around it and pat dry. Before blowdrying, comb your hair (never use a brush when it's wet as that can cause breakage) and spritz on a heat-protective spray. Most damage occurs in the final stages of drying, so stop when it's 90 per cent dry.
